Michigan Roads Are Eating Your Vehicle From the Bottom Up

You spent $60,000, $75,000, maybe $90,000 or more on your truck. You researched it for months. You chose the right package, the right color, the right options. And then you drove it home through a Michigan winter.

What happened underneath that truck from that first November through the following March? Michigan dumps nearly 2 million tons of road salt on its roads every year, roughly 400 pounds for every man, woman, and child in the state. Macomb County alone uses about 65,000 tons in a single winter. That salt doesn’t just melt ice and wash away. It creeps into frame rails. It settles into rocker panels. It pools inside cab corners and door bottoms where moisture can’t escape. And it starts working on the metal from the inside out, where you can’t see it happening until it’s already too late.

By the time rust shows on the outside of your rocker panels, the structural damage is already done. Brake lines corrode. Fuel lines fail. Frame rails rot from the inside. Five major vehicle manufacturers have issued recalls covering nearly 7.4 million vehicles specifically because of road salt corrosion of safety components.

Rite-Way Auto Reconditioning uses NHOU professional oil undercoating and the NHOU Boss Wax Hybrid system to stop that process before it starts. We’ve been protecting vehicles in Macomb County for years, and we know exactly what Michigan winters do to a truck that isn’t properly protected.

If You Drive a GM Truck or SUV, Pay Attention

Silverado. Sierra. Suburban. Tahoe. Yukon. These are some of the most popular vehicles in Macomb County, and they have a well-documented rust problem that GM has never fully resolved.

The issue comes down to how GM frames are built and finished from the factory. The factory wax coating applied to GM truck frames was designed to provide protection for approximately one year in harsh environments, according to testimony from a senior GM engineer. After that, GM’s own engineers expected the coating to fail. Meanwhile, the box-section frame rails used on most GM trucks have limited drain holes, which means salt-laden water gets inside the hollow frame sections and sits there. No drainage, no airflow, no way out. The moisture and salt just work on the metal from the inside.

The result is predictable if you’ve lived in Michigan long enough. Rust bubbling through rockers on a 2014 Silverado with 60,000 miles. Frame rails with through-holes on trucks that should have another decade of life. Brake line replacements on trucks less than 15 years old that cost thousands of dollars. GM dealers will tell you it’s normal wear and tear for the region, and technically they’re right, which is exactly why waiting and hoping isn’t a strategy.

Ford and Ram trucks have similar cavity issues, though the specific failure points differ. Any vehicle with hollow structural sections, limited drain holes, and a thin factory coating is vulnerable. In Michigan, that’s nearly every vehicle on the road.

The fix isn’t complicated. It’s cavity treatment with an oil-based product that penetrates and displaces moisture, applied before the rust process gets started. That’s exactly what Rite-Way does.

Built for Specific Trucks

GM, Ford, and Ram trucks each have their own cavity and frame rail issues. We’ve put together dedicated guides for the most common trucks on Macomb County roads:

Why Oil-Based Undercoating Beats Rubberized Spray

A lot of shops and dealers still apply rubberized undercoating. It looks good on a lift and it photographs well. But rubberized coatings have a problem that oil-based products don’t: they trap moisture.
Rubberized coatings sit on the surface of exposed metal. Over time they crack, and when they do, water gets in behind the coating and gets sealed there. The rubber stops it from draining out. The metal underneath rusts faster, in the dark, hidden from view.

Oil-based undercoating like NHOU works differently. It creeps. It flows into seams, penetrates crevices, and wicks into the same hidden spaces where water would otherwise sit. It pushes moisture out rather than trapping it. And when it’s applied to internal cavities through a specialized injection tool, it coats surfaces that a spray-on rubberized product will never reach.

This distinction is critical for vehicles like GM trucks, where the real rust problem is inside the frame rails and body cavities, not on the exposed underbody surfaces that rubberized coatings cover. Rubberized spray on a GM truck rocker panel looks like protection. It isn’t.

What You're Actually Protecting

NHOU Oil V3

Starting at $675

This is our annual rustproofing and undercoating package, built around professional cavity treatment using atomized NHOU Oil V3. Unlike a basic spray-on service, every job starts with a thorough preparation process before a single drop of product goes on your vehicle.

NHOU Oil V3 is a maintenance undercoating, not a permanent coating. It combines petroleum oil for deep penetration, wax for longer-lasting protection, and lanolin for moisture resistance. Once applied, it stays active: it continues to creep into seams over time, and it self-heals when scratched.

What's included:

NHOU Oil V3 contains lanolin, wool wax, and corrosion inhibitors, plus Mouse-Out rodent deterrent technology, a genuine bonus for anyone who’s had a mouse build a nest inside their truck cab in a Michigan winter.

With normal driving and no high-pressure underbody washes, this treatment lasts approximately two years. If you run your truck through automatic car washes with undercarriage wash cycles regularly, count on annual reapplication — annual service is the safest recommendation for Michigan’s salt exposure either way. No warranty is included with this package, but for customers who want professional protection without a long-term

NHOU Boss Wax Hybrid

Starting at $1,675

Our premium package includes everything in the Oil V3 package, plus application of NHOU Boss Wax Hybrid to all exposed underbody surfaces. This is a completely different system than Oil V3, not just an upgrade of it: it penetrates to the base metal, pushes out moisture, and cures over approximately 48 hours to form a durable, matte-black, semi-permanent barrier. The oil underneath continues creeping into seams even after the surface layer has cured, so you still get the cavity-level protection of Oil V3, plus a sealed surface on top of it.

Why this matters: the oil alone is excellent for internal cavities. But exposed underbody components, crossmembers, suspension parts, differentials, the underside of the bed, take a direct hit from road debris and salt spray every single day. The Boss Wax Hybrid system seals those surfaces against that direct exposure.

What's included beyond the Oil V3 package:

To keep the lifetime warranty active, you’ll need to return every two years for inspection by an authorized NHOU dealer. At that visit we touch up any damaged areas, reapply cavity oil where needed, and issue documentation confirming the inspection was completed. Normal touch-ups are covered under the warranty; major repairs from accidents or extensive damage may not be. Cost is $175 per inspection. Skip the inspection and the lifetime warranty is voided. Stay current and your vehicle has professional corrosion protection for as long as you own it, and if you sell, the warranty transfers to the new owner, which is a genuine selling point at trade-in time.

How Rite-Way Is Different From Krown, Ziebart, and Dealer Undercoating

You have options for rustproofing in the Metro Detroit area. Here’s an honest comparison.

Krown. Krown is an oil-based system, which is the right approach. But Krown’s service is relatively quick and doesn’t include the prep work that Rite-Way does. There’s no Salts Gone pre-wash. There’s no frame rail flushing. You’re applying oil over whatever salt and moisture is already sitting inside your frame rails. On a vehicle that already has salt deposits built up inside the cavities, that’s a meaningful difference. Rite-Way clears the contamination out first, then treats. That’s not an optional step, it’s what makes the treatment effective.

Ziebart. Ziebart uses a rubberized undercoating product as a core part of their system. As discussed above, rubberized coatings trap moisture once they crack, which they will. Ziebart does offer oil-based options in some locations, but their primary undercoating product is not oil-based. For Michigan vehicles with hollow structural sections and limited drainage, rubberized coatings create a false sense of security.

Dealer undercoating. If a dealer offers undercoating at point of sale, it’s almost always applied by a third-party contractor, often the same day or week you pick up the vehicle, without the prep work. The product is typically a spray-on rubberized coating. You pay $300 to $600 for something that traps moisture behind a cracking rubber layer. We’ve seen the results. Pass on dealer undercoating and schedule a proper treatment within the first year of ownership.

Rite-Way NHOU. We use a professional oil-based system with actual cavity injection through specialized tooling. Every service starts with neutralizing the salt load already on your vehicle, flushing the frame rails, and drying before any product is applied. The Boss Wax Hybrid upgrade adds a matte-black, semi-permanent barrier coat over the oil layer. We have 35+ years of combined automotive reconditioning experience, and we understand what Michigan driving actually does to a vehicle. This isn’t a franchise job done by a part-time technician. It’s a professional service by people who do this every day.

Our Undercoating & Rustproofing Packages

The obvious answer is your paint and body panels. But what road salt destroys first, on a Michigan vehicle, is usually invisible until it becomes expensive.

Frame rails and structural members

when these develop through-holes, your truck's structural integrity is compromised. Frame replacement or major repair can cost more than the vehicle is worth.

Brake lines

metal brake lines corrode from the outside in Michigan winters. Failures require full line replacement at significant cost. Salt-related brake line failures have triggered millions of vehicle recalls nationally.

Fuel lines

same problem as brake lines. Often replaced at the same time on high-mileage Michigan vehicles.

Rocker panels and cab corners

cosmetic at first, structural later. By the time you can see the rust bubbling through paint, metal loss behind the panel is already significant.

Suspension components

control arms, subframe mounts, and related hardware rust aggressively in the salt belt. Replacement costs are substantial.

Resale value

a truck with visible frame rust or corroded undercarriage loses thousands in trade-in value. Buyers and dealers know what Michigan vehicles look like underneath.

Frequently Asked Questions About Undercoating & Rustproofing in Michigan

The terms are often used interchangeably, but technically they refer to different things. Undercoating is a product applied to the exposed underside of the vehicle, the floor pan, frame, and underbody components, to protect against moisture, salt, and road debris. Rustproofing typically refers to cavity treatment: injecting oil or other product into enclosed body sections like rocker panels, doors, frame rails, and cab corners where water and salt collect and can't drain. A comprehensive service like what Rite-Way offers does both.

At Rite-Way, our NHOU Oil V3 undercoating and rustproofing package starts at $675. This includes the full prep process, Salts Gone pre-wash, frame rail flushing, drying, cavity treatment, and full underbody application. Our NHOU Boss Wax Hybrid premium package starts at $1,675 and adds a matte-black, semi-permanent surface barrier coat with a transferable lifetime warranty. Dealer undercoating at point of sale typically runs $300 to $600, but uses a rubberized product without the prep work and cavity injection our service includes.

For the NHOU Oil V3 package, plan on every one to two years depending on your driving habits. Annual reapplication is the safest recommendation for Michigan's salt exposure, especially if you regularly run through automatic car washes with underbody wash cycles. For the NHOU Boss Wax Hybrid package, an inspection every two years is required to maintain the lifetime warranty. At that inspection we touch up damaged areas, reapply cavity oil where needed, and document that the inspection was completed.

For Michigan vehicles, yes. Oil-based undercoating penetrates seams and crevices, displaces moisture, and reaches inside hollow structural sections through cavity injection. Rubberized undercoating sits on the surface and eventually cracks, at which point moisture gets trapped behind it and causes faster corrosion than if nothing had been applied. Rubberized products look good when new and are cheaper to apply, which is why dealers and lower-cost shops use them. NHOU's oil-based system is what professional rustproofing shops use in the salt belt.

In most cases, no. NHOU Oil V3 is designed to treat vehicles that are already showing early corrosion. The oil penetrates and displaces moisture, and can stabilize existing surface rust by eliminating the moisture and oxygen that the rust process requires. It won't reverse metal loss that's already occurred, but it can stop the progression. The Boss Wax Hybrid system is better suited to newer vehicles or those with minimal existing rust. When you bring your vehicle in, we'll assess the condition and tell you which service makes the most sense.

Professional oil-based undercoating applied by a qualified shop will not void your factory warranty. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prohibits manufacturers from voiding a warranty simply because an aftermarket product or service was used. Where dealer warranties can get complicated is if they can show that a specific service caused a specific failure. Professional NHOU application doesn't damage any vehicle components, so this isn't a realistic concern.

Yes. This is one of the key advantages of the NHOU system over spray-on products. We use a specialized frame jet tool to flush the frame rails, then inject the atomized NHOU Oil V3 into the cavity through drilled access points or existing openings. The oil mists through the entire interior of the frame rail, coating the metal and displacing any moisture. This internal cavity treatment is what protects against the inside-out rust that destroys GM truck frames. A spray coating on the exterior of the frame does essentially nothing to protect the interior cavity.

Yes, and it's worth doing. Michigan road salt damage accumulates quickly, and leased vehicles are subject to excess wear and tear charges at turn-in. Rust damage to rocker panels, body panels, and undercarriage components is specifically called out in most lease agreements as chargeable damage. Protecting the vehicle's underside during the lease term is one of the better investments you can make if you're planning to return it in good condition.

Allow three to four hours for the full service. The Salts Gone pre-wash, frame rail flushing, and drying process takes time before we ever apply product. This is a precision service, not a quick spray-and-go job. For the Boss Wax Hybrid package, allow four to five hours. We recommend dropping your vehicle off rather than waiting.
